TGIF #7: The Snooze Button

Image Source: Mingret

Are you the kind of person who bounces out of bed as soon as the alarm goes off? I am not. Some people cannot wake up until they hear a loud noise which jerks them awake but I prefer a more gentle approach. Most of my alarm tones are soft and melodious and serve to nudge me awake rather than shaking me up. I generally roll around for some, try and bury my head into my pillow and wish the world to go away. But obviously since I have a life, I need to get up eventually. If you are anything like me, then the snooze button on your mobile phone must surely be one of the most used.

Usually I set the alarm to go off about 15 – 20 minutes before the actual time that I might need to wake up. This way once the initial alarm wakes me up, somehow there is a smug sense of satisfaction, knowing that I can sleep an extra 5 or 10 minutes! What’s more I can comfortably doze off again, secure in the knowledge that the alarm will faithfully ring again in a short while. At times when I don’t happen to have my phone with me or if it has simply died as I have forgotten to feed it some life-giving charge, I end up being paranoid – waking up intermittently every 2 minutes into my dozing period and checking the time , afraid that I might have overslept.  Of course, there are also times when I mistakenly press the ‘off’ button instead of the ‘snooze’ in my semi-sleepy state, which then leads to inevitable delays accompanied by inappropriate cursing.

I know that research suggests people are better off without the snooze button as apparently it only makes you sleepier and lethargic. I also realize it probably goes to show the extent of our dependence on machines and gadgets in our day-to-day lives. But hey! It works for me and I’m not complaining! Sometimes we never acknowledge the small and seemingly insignificant things in our lives, that go a long way in making our lives far more comfortable, easy and dare I say lazy too?!. The poor little snooze button is one such thing. Thank God for it!

  1. "I'm the kind of person who bounces out of bed as soon as the alarm goes off"...and press the snooze button and sleep for another precious 10 minutes ;). I would have slept for hours, but that extra fifteen minutes is so very precious :)

  2. I have a love-hate relationship with the snooze button. I love it when I use it for myself, but absolutely detest it when someone next to me uses it every 5 minutes for 30-40 minutes, totally shattering my blissful state! :)

  3. :) haha :) i wake up without snooze :D

  4. I can absolutely relate to your post... Even I have an alarm time set 30 minutes before the actual time I need to wake up... Whatte pleasure in having that extra sleep?

    Our brain got used to that extra sleeping so we need to cheat like this to have that joy :)

  5. @Neeraja: By "someone next to me" do you mean Anand ;-)
    But I get what you mean! Ajay keeps doing that a lot-and I hate it! Especially on holidays/weekends! Aarrghh! I wanna sleeeppp! Lol!

    @Chintan: Wow! Good for you!

    @Anand: Yep true!

  6. till now was never used to it[UG period]...after joining PG it has become a necessity...allowing me to sleep for an extra 10min!!.....have started liking it...

  7. Blogger's acting crazy and not displaying some of the comments :-(

    From Meera:
    Anne about the snooze button.. it is not useful. Just makes you go back to sleep :-)When I was in school and college I used to have a terrible clanging alarm coz I wanted to wake everyone up when I did - gave me a sadistic pleasure I guess. But these days I enjoy the quiet the dawn brings with it!

    From Arpitha:
    Arpitha Holla has left a new comment on your post "TGIF #7: The Snooze Button":

    nice post.. i do the same thing but a little diffrently as i keep the alarm for atleast half an hour before i want to wake up nd give the snooze as 5 mins or 10 mins.. :) so by the time i have to get up i would hav pressed snooze atleast 3 to 5 times.. :) :)

  8. @Meera: So it makes me go back to sleep-how can that not be useful?!? Sleeping is very good for health Meera ;-)
    Actually I always liked the way my dad woke me up - very sweetly and gently cajoling me to wake up. My mom in a hurry to finish cooking and inbetween getting ready for work, used to come and give one shout to make you jump out of bed! Or cleverly switch off the fan - that was her wicked tactic ;-)I try to wake up people as gently as possible-although some people need great effort!!

  9. @Arpitha: Ha! The lil pleasures of life ;-)

    @Broca: Join the club ;-)

  10. S'noose' the nap.Never realised the 'invincible slumber shattering button' could cause so much debate...well written !!

  11. Good yaar.. You can get a sleep in that 10-15 minutes Snooze period! Even I use them in the morning... But I never get sleep!!! So I prefer to wake up when it rings the first time after rolling on the bed for some time..

  12. thank god for the snooze button!

    there are times i have woken up before the alarm went off & waited for it to ring :(

  13. @Sujatha: Yep me too sometimes!

    @Sunil: I don't know whether you are lucky because you can get up so easily or unlucky because you can't savour the joy of sleeping those extra 10 mins!!

    @The Mind Behind: Thanks for your sweet comment!

I love reading comments! Please leave one (or many!). I sincerely appreciate it.
